What Will You Learn?

By the end of the course, you'll understand key concepts in English language learning and teaching, know how to plan and deliver lessons, and be able to manage a classroom effectively. If you take a specialised module, you'll also learn to teach through CLIL or to young learners aged 6–12.

The course is modular, and modules may not always be taught in the order listed below.

Language and background to language learning and teaching

Key terms and concepts in English language teaching, the factors underpinning how learners acquire English, and a range of materials, tasks, and activities for teaching it

Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching

The knowledge and skills needed to plan lessons, plus the types of assessment and resources that can guide your planning

Managing the teaching and learning process

Teachers' and learners' classroom language, and classroom management

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)

The learning, thinking, and language skills learners acquire across different curriculum areas; planning, delivering, and assessing CLIL lessons

YL (Young Learners)

Learning and development in young learners aged 6–12, and the strategies, planning, delivery, and assessment needed to teach them

Module 3

Language and background to language learning and teaching

Each module ends with a Cambridge TKT exam — an 80-question test combining multiple-choice and matching questions, lasting 80 minutes — taken in person at ICD's Lahore, Karachi, or Islamabad office.

The number of modules required depends on which certificate you're working towards:

Each participant is assigned a unique login ID and password and is required to complete all coursework online through the ICD portal. Certificates are only awarded upon successful completion of the coursework on the ICD portal.

Submit Application

Submit your application through ICD's online form. Shortlisted candidates receive an offer letter.

Payment & Enrolment

Pay the course fee and share the payment receipt to confirm enrolment.

Access Portal

Once enrolled, you'll receive your login details by email to begin coursework on ICD's portal.

Each of the four annual intakes (Jan, April, July, October) runs for 3 months.

What certificates can I earn?

Teaching English as a Foreign Language. At ICD, the qualification is built around Cambridge's TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) modules.

What certificates can I earn?

You'll receive an ICD certificate for your overall course (40, 120, 150, or 180 hours), plus a separate Cambridge TKT certificate for every module you complete.

How is each module assessed?

With a Cambridge TKT exam — an 80-question test combining multiple-choice and matching questions, taken in person at ICD's Lahore, Karachi, or Islamabad office at the end of each module.

Can I do the whole course online?

Coursework is completed online through ICD's portal, and the weekly face-to-face session can also be attended online if you prefer. The TKT module exams themselves, however, must be taken in person at an ICD office.

Do I need any prior teaching experience?

No — TEFL is designed for new and experienced teachers alike, as well as ELT graduates and anyone wanting to teach English internationally.

What can I do after completing TEFL?

Graduates can progress to other Cambridge English teaching qualifications offered by ICD, such as CELTA.

How long does it take to get my certificate?

It depends on which certificate: your Cambridge TKT certificate for each module arrives in up to 6 weeks (paper-based exam). You can get your certificate from your nearest ICD centre, separately, approximately two weeks after you complete the course.
